Why Poland? It is impossible to tell the history of Poland in a nutshell. The country boasts a chequered past, rich culture, varied geography and vivid customs. Poland is over 1000 years old and centrally located in Europe. Throughout this period it has been under the influence of various European states and their cultures as well as contributed a great deal to the European continent. Poland witnessed the beginnings of Christianity in Europe. It was often a case that the fate of other states was decided on the Polish soil. Poland fought many battles to defend its freedom and sovereignty. After being partitioned and annexed by three occupying powers, it was wiped off the map from the end of the 18th century until after WWI. Modern Poland enjoys a stable democracy and can boast a captivating past, rich cultural legacy and charming landscapes. Explore the sights and savour the climate! In the north, Poland is bordered by the Baltic Sea. Its cold waters are complimented by the astounding coastline and unforgettable sunsets. The central belt of Poland is flat, densely forested and covered with blossomy meadows. Numerous wildlife reserves are home to a variety of protected species of animals and plants. The southern frontier is marked by several mountain ranges. The south-west part of Poland is comprised of the Karkonosze Mountains that once were volcanoes and hot lava. Today you can admire rock formations, remnants of days gone by. The area is also popular with keen skiers. To the south, the only alpine type mountains stretch, the Polish Tatras. They are characterised by towering peaks, alpine flora and climate, and patches of snow that remain there for as long as 10 months every year. Further to the east lies the Beskid Niski (the Low Beskid), densely forested and rarely crisscrossed by roads, which makes the area inaccessible and fascinating at the same time. Finally, the south-east corner of Poland is taken up by the high, yet gentle grassy hills of the Bieszczady. Go and see for yourself! |
